This project aims to establish a coordination network including representatives of industry, manufacturers, academia, and users of integrated smart devices. The “Internet of Things (IoT)” is the term used to describe the use and integration of smart devices capable of monitoring, controlling, collecting, sending, and receiving data to intelligent systems. The emergence of IoT will transform homes, institutions of education, manufacturing facilities, and other work places. As a new and rapidly emerging area of technology, IoT will generate a substantial need for technicians, technology integrators, and programmers. Community colleges across the nation are struggling with understanding and building programs to meet this future workforce need. As for other disruptive technologies, the emergence of IoT challenges educators to acquire the background knowledge needed to design high-quality IoT classes and programs. This collaboration network is designed to support the academic community at community colleges by studying the emergence of IoT technologies. The network plans to complete research projects on IoT products, technologies, standards, and applications. The results of these studies will help to inform decisions about how to optimally develop IoT programs at community colleges.

The IoT Coordination Network aspires to bring together the principals and organizations that are leading the emergence of this technology. Members of this network include companies that manufacture and integrate IoT devices, and organizations that establish standards that govern IoT technologies. The network also intends to include experts on protecting the users and environments that are projected to be affected by these IoT devices. The project intends to convene this network of experts quarterly to examine emerging technologies, explore new products and devices, and provide guidance to educators preparing the next generation of IoT technicians.

Moraine Valley Community College (MVCC) has been awarded a National Science Foundation grant to support students interested in studying cybersecurity.

About the program

Community College Cyber Pilot Program (C3P): Scholarship for Service (SFS) is a unique program designed to increase and strengthen the cadre of information assurance professionals that protect the government’s critical information infrastructure.

MVCC C3P scholars will complete an associate degree in computer information systems or cybersecurity.

 Eligibility

• United States citizen or lawful permanent resident
• Currently enrolled in, or applied for admission/transfer to, a cybersecurity-related program at MVCC

• Associate in science degree in computer information systems (AS in CIS)
• Associate in applied science – transfer degree in cybersecurity (AAS-T in cybersecurity)
• Other approved program of study (must be approved by the program director)

• Have a bachelor’s degree in any discipline or be a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces
• Meet selection criteria for federal employment, including obtaining a security clearance

Benefits

• Full tuition and academic fees for up to two years
• Annual stipend of $25,000
• Annual textbook and professional development allowance of $6,000
• Paid summer internship at a local/state/federal agency between the scholar’s first and second year in the program*
• If successful, full-time employment at a local/state/federal government agency*

* The MVCC C3P Scholars are responsible to apply for and obtain a position. The MVCC C3P Program will provide assistance with identifying employment opportunities.

Selection

MVCC C3P scholarships are offered on a competitive basis. The scholarships are effective for up to two years starting with the fall semester. Scholarship recipients are selected based on:

• Academic performance
• Resume key items
• Letters of recommendation
• Essay outlining the applicant’s objectives as it relates to cybersecurity and a career in the government
• Ability to obtain security clearance
• Interview

CyberCorps: SCHOLARSHIP FOR SERVICE

Moraine Valley Community College (MVCC) has worked with Purdue University Northwest to support students interested in studying cybersecurity. This project is no longer ongoing.

You are invited to learn more about CyberCorps Scholarship For Service (SFS), a unique opportunity designed to recruit and train the next generation of cybersecurity professionals. This program provides funds to colleges and universities for student scholarships in support of education in areas relevant to cybersecurity. In return for their scholarships, recipients must agree to work after graduation for the Federal Government or, subject to approval of the NSF program office and OPM, for a State, Local, or Tribal Government in a position related to cybersecurity for a period equal to the length of the scholarship. This program will exchange three years of education (1 year at MVCC and 2 years at Purdue University Northwest) for three years of service at a government agency.

The scholarship package includes the following:

• Stipend: $25,000 per year for undergraduate and $34,000 per year for graduate.
• Full tuition and education related fees.
• Professional development allowance (travel, professional certification etc. (up to $6000 per year).
• A book allowance (up to $2,000 per year).

This program provides scholarships for up to 3 years of support for cybersecurity undergraduate and graduate (MS or PhD) education. The scholarships are funded through grants awarded by the National Science Foundation. In return for their scholarships, recipients must agree to work after graduation for the U.S. Government, in a position related to cybersecurity, for a period equal to the length of the scholarship.

Community College Workforce Study

Community colleges have increased the number of cybersecurity professionals that graduate from their  programs each year. These individuals are finding employment in every sector of our economy and are addressing the nation’s shortage. The federal government led by the NIST/NICE Project have been able to better define the nations cybersecurity workforce through a list of 52 specialized cybersecurity work roles. This study was designed to examine the type of cybersecurity jobs filled by community college graduates and how they align to the NICE frameworks job roles. This study was conducted as a partnership between the National Cybersecurity Training and Education Center (NCyTE) and the Center for Systems Security and Information Assurance (CSSIA) and was funded by the NSF. The study examined graduates from 12 of the nation’s top community college cybersecurity programs. The study is based on student interviews and self-identification of their current cybersecurity work roles. Doctoral candidates from Dakota State University interviewed the alumni and collected survey data. The results were analyzed and published by Dr. John Sands and Corrinne Sande. The study reveals the type of positions community college students are prepared for. The study highlights current trends and identifies potential opportunities for community college graduates.
